Ital-IA 2022 è il terzoConvegno Nazionale CINI sull'Intelligenza Artificiale, organizzato per sviluppare obiettivi comuni tra istituzioni pubbliche, industria italiana e la ricerca scientifica delle università e dei centri di ricerca nazionali. Il convegno è organizzato dal Laboratorio Nazionale "Artificial Intelligence ed Intelligent Systems" (AIIS), creato dal CINI (Consorzio Interuniversitario Nazionale per l'Informatica). Abstract: Structural causal models are the fundamental modelling unit in Pearl’s theory of causality. In principle they allow to solve counterfactuals, which are at the top rung of the ladder of causation. In practice they often contain latent variables, this limiting their application to special settings. We notice how observations of the manifest variables induce constraints on the probabilities of the latent ones. This allows to map a causal model into a credal network. Causal inferences, such as those based on interventions and counterfactuals, can consequently be obtained by inference algorithms for credal networks. These return sharp values in the identifiable case, while intervals corresponding to the exact bounds are produced in the unidentifiable case. To bypass the computational hurdles imposed by credal network inference in the general case, we then derive an EM scheme that allows to address inference via standard algorithms for Bayesian networks. The result is a general method to compute counterfactuals, be they identifiable or not (in which case we deliver an inner approximation of the bounds). We also provide credible intervals proving that the EM approximation becomes accurate in a fair number of runs. We finally discuss an empirical validation on a synthetic benchmark, a case study on palliative care and some recent extensions to cope with hybrid and/or biased data.

Speaker:  Alessandro Antonucci, Senior Lecturer-Researcher at Idsia, the Swiss AI Lab affiliated with the University of Lugano (USI) and the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI). He is the author of more than 100 peer-reviewed publications and an Area Editor of the International Journal of Approximate Reasoning. His research interests are mostly focused on probabilistic graphical models for automatic reasoning and machine learning and their application to explainability and causality theory. He is also leading a number of applied projects involving partners such as Armasuisse and Swiss Post, mostly involving the application of machine and reinforcement learning algorithms.

Ital-IA 2022 è il secondo Convegno Nazionale CINI sull'Intelligenza Artificiale, organizzato per sviluppare obiettivi comuni tra istituzioni pubbliche, industria italiana e la ricerca scientifica delle università e dei centri di ricerca nazionali. Il convegno è organizzato dal Laboratorio Nazionale "Artificial Intelligence ed Intelligent Systems" (AIIS), creato dal CINI (Consorzio Interuniversitario Nazionale per l'Informatica), dall' Università del Piemonte Orientale, dall'Università di Torino e dal Politecnico di Torino. Il Consorzio Interuniversitario Nazionale per l’Informatica con il Laboratorio Nazionale CINI di Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent System (LN AIIS) ha il piacere di annunciare il seguente evento in modalità telematica: "IA per l'Italia Futura - AI for Future Italy", Giovedì 23 luglio dalle 11:00 alle 12:30.

Nell’evento verrà presentato il documento elaborato dal comitato di redazione del LN AIIS per una visione complessiva sulla ricerca in Intelligenza Artificiale in Italia, al fine di contribuire alle strategie di ricerca degli organismi istituzionali.

Lutto/Mourning 

È con enorme tristezza che apprendiamo la notizia della scomparsa del nostro caro collega Gian Luigi Bulsei, sociologo e membro del nostro Comitato Tecnico Scientifico, avvenuta il 22 marzo. Gigi è stato tra le persone più entusiaste per la nascita del centro AI@UPO e la sua presenza e competenza è una grandissima perdita per il nostro centro e per tutto il mondo accademico.

It is with deep sadness that we hear that our friend and colleague Gian Luigi Bulsei, sociologist and member of our Scientific Board, passed away on March 22nd. Gigi has been one of the most enthusiastic promoter of AI@UPO, and we will deeply miss his presence and his competence.
